Commodore 1541 Disk Drive
The external 5.25-inch floppy disk drive for the C64. Faster, more reliable and higher-capacity than the Datasette.
Commodore 1541: the iconic floppy disk drive for the C64
The Commodore 1541 is the external floppy disk drive designed for the Commodore 64. Introduced in 1982 alongside the C64, it remained the standard drive throughout the 8-bit era.
The 1541 uses 5.25-inch floppy disks holding around 170 KB per side and connects to the C64 via a serial cable. Unlike the Datasette, it gave fast direct access to individual files, and load errors were virtually unknown. A large game like The Last Ninja might span several disks.
Three variants were produced: the original 1541 (1982), the 1541C (1986) and the 1541-II (1988). Each generation brought improvements in size, heat and reliability while keeping full compatibility with the C64.

The three variants of the 1541
The 1541 was sold in three generations, differing in case design, electronics and power supply, but all using the same disk format and BASIC commands.
1541 (1982)
The original model in a beige case matching the C64. Large form factor, built-in power supply, solid mechanics. Recognisable by the front slot and LED indicator.
1541C (1986)
More compact white model with a revised mechanism and improved reliability. Matched the new white colour scheme of the C64C.
1541-II (1988)
The slimmest and most reliable model. An external power brick reduces heat and interference. Simplified electronics with fewer components and better stability.
How to use the 1541 disk drive
The 1541 is straightforward to use. Follow these five steps to get started with floppy disks on your C64.
- 01
Connect
Plug the 1541 into the serial port on the right side of the C64 using a serial cable. Switch off the computer first.
- 02
Power on
Connect the drive's power supply to a mains socket and switch it on. The 1541 has its own power supply and does not draw power from the C64.
- 03
Insert a disk
Insert a 5.25-inch floppy disk into the drive slot and close the lever.
- 04
View the directory
Type LOAD"$",8 and press RETURN, then LIST and RETURN to display all files on the disk.
- 05
Load a program
Type LOAD"*",8,1 and press RETURN, then RUN and RETURN to load and run the first program. Replace the asterisk with a filename to load a specific program.

Double-sided disks: the notching trick
Each side of a 5.25-inch floppy disk holds around 170 KB. To use both sides, you could cut a notch into the second side of the disk using a special notching tool. The disk could then be flipped and used as a second side, doubling the total capacity to around 340 KB.

Modern alternatives to the 1541
Original 1541 drives can need maintenance after more than 40 years. Several modern alternatives emulate the 1541's serial interface and give access to thousands of disk images from SD cards or USB sticks.
SD2IEC
Reads SD cards and emulates the 1541's serial interface. Affordable, easy to use and compatible with the vast majority of C64 software.
1541 Ultimate II+
Cartridge with very accurate 1541 emulation, REU expansion, SID replacement and much more. The most complete solution for demanding users.
Pi1541
Open-source solution based on the Raspberry Pi. Emulates the 1541 at cycle level for maximum compatibility with copy-protected software.
