The High Voltage SID Collection

The High Voltage SID Collection, known as HVSC, is the definitive archive of Commodore 64 music. Started in the mid-1990s, it is a community-driven project that has been collecting and preserving SID files ever since. The collection now holds over 50,000 tunes from thousands of composers.

Every file in the HVSC is carefully documented with composer credits, release information and technical details such as the SID chip variant used. The collection is free to download and is updated regularly as new tunes are discovered or recovered from old disks.

Desktop SID players

SidPlay2/W

SidPlay has been the standard desktop SID player for decades. Available on Windows, macOS and Linux, it provides accurate emulation of both the 6581 and 8580 SID chip variants. The player supports the entire HVSC collection and includes subsong selection, filter controls and playlist management.

ACID64

ACID64 is particularly valued for its support of real SID chip hardware. Users who own a HardSID or similar USB-connected SID interface can play SID files through genuine MOS Technology chips, achieving perfect audio reproduction. For those without hardware, ACID64 also includes high-quality software emulation.

DeepSID

DeepSID is the most accessible modern SID player. It runs entirely in the browser with no installation needed. You can search the full HVSC catalogue by composer, game title or year, play tunes directly on the page, and save favourites. It works equally well on desktop and mobile.

Composing SID music today

The C64 music scene is still active. Composers continue to write new SID tunes using the same tools and techniques as the original C64 musicians. The most widely used composition tool is GoatTracker, a cross-platform tracker that produces authentic SID output and is free to download.

SidWizard is another popular option for those who want to compose directly on a real C64 or within an emulator. It runs as a C64 programme and gives composers direct access to the SID hardware. New tunes created with these tools are regularly submitted to the HVSC and to remix sites like Remix64.

SID music remixes and covers

Beyond the original SID files, C64 music has inspired a large community of remixers and cover artists. Remix64.com is the primary home for extended remixes, featuring thousands of reworked C64 tracks across genres from ambient to metal.
